Alan Yim is a registered social worker (RSW) with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Social Work (BSW) from York University in Ontario, followed by a Master’s degree (MA) in School Guidance and Counselling, and a Doctor of Education (EdD) from the Chinese University of Hong Kong. After completing his post-doctoral externship in psychotherapy, Alan joined Woodbine Psychological & Counselling Services as a psychotherapist.
With over a decade of experience as a professional counsellor in both university and community mental health settings, Alan has supported adolescents, adults, and seniors from diverse cultural backgrounds in navigating their psychological concerns and emotional distress. He specializes in addressing issues such as career indecision, adjustment difficulties, work/school problems, relationship issues, family conflict, anxiety, depression, emotional distress, and grief.
Alan is committed to cultivating psychological flexibility in individuals, through strategies and techniques from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). Drawing from ACT, he helps clients create rich and meaningful lives while accepting the inevitable pain that comes with it. He also incorporates interventions from Mindfulness, Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Narrative Therapy, and Solution-focused Therapy.
Alan is fluent in English, Cantonese, and Mandarin, allowing him to offer services in multiple languages.
