Who Can Benefit from a Neuropsychological Assessment or Intervention?
Anyone who is struggling with thinking, learning, emotions, or behavior may benefit from an assessment or intervention. Sometimes there’s a known diagnosis (for example, a brain injury, stroke, ADHD, schizophrenia, learning difficulties, neurodevelopmental disorders like Autism Spectrum Disorder, etc.) or sometimes there’s a concern about thinking, but there isn’t a diagnosis yet. We can help adults get diagnoses, inform their strengths and challenges profile and provide intervention options and personalized recommendations to help everyone support their goals.
What is a Neuropsychology Assessment?
“A neuropsychology assessment is a way to learn more about how a person’s brain is working. It helps us understand things like memory, attention, problem-solving, and emotions. It’s especially helpful if someone is having trouble at school, work, or in daily life. The goal is to figure out strengths and challenges, provide a diagnosis if needed, and recommend ways to help, which are shared with you during a feedback session.
What Happens During a Neuropsychological Assessment?
The assessment includes different types of activities, like answering questions, solving puzzles, doing computer activities and remembering information. It’s not a test you pass or fail—it’s just a way to understand how your brain works. We also ask about medical history and daily life to get the full picture. Afterward, the neuropsychologist reviews everything and creates a report with helpful recommendations.
What is a Neuropsychology Intervention?
A neuropsychology intervention is a way to improve thinking skills, emotions, and behavior. If someone has trouble with focus, memory, or managing emotions, we can teach strategies and exercises to help. These sessions are personalized based on what each person needs.
How long does a neuropsychological assessment take?
It usually takes a day of testing, but it can be two days, especially if someone feels tired or fatigued. We want to make sure we don’t overwhelm anyone, so we always check in to see how people are feeling while we do assessments. We also always include a break for you to get lunch – and we offer other breaks too, as needed!
Do I need a diagnosis to be a part of an intervention or therapy?
Yes. We need to know what the individual is experiencing to be able to design or apply the right intervention. This is a bit like going to the GP and being assessed to know what’s wrong, to get the right medicine. If you have concerns about yours or someone else’s thinking, behaviour or emotions – you can certainly have an assessment done, and we can go from there!
When will I get my results?
We do our best to make sure you get the results – and feedback, and recommendations, as soon as possible. This might mean waiting a few weeks. We make sure to ask you if you have any important deadlines coming up, like for a disability application, a school IEP, etc., so we can do everything we can to meet your needs.
Can I do this virtually?
We are not currently offering neuropsychological assessment or interventions virtually – but we can do the initial interview and feedback virtually, if you like. The assessments occur at our Ajax location.
When will I get an appointment?
We have one clinical neuropsychologist on staff currently. We hope to accommodate appointments as soon as possible. Please note our current waitlist
